Hope many people like her and many others could make it to Bad River for the arrival of the Water, opportunity for Unity with all Nations. Since the family was the core unit of our ancestors’ nation, action must begin with the families. Brothers and sisters, along with their parents need to sit down in a circle with flipcharts and engage in the same type of strategic planning that big corporations and governments do, with brainstorming and a good facilitator. Each family needs a strategic plan for how all the little nephews and neices will achieve freedom from fear and want. Once one family take the lead others will follow; pretty soon we’ll have community plans, then plans for the restoration of our nations.

The first step is to plan a “probing sequence/strategy”; basically the questions wee need to ask ourselves. I would suggest the following agenda/probing sequence.

    1. Initial brainstorming: family members (FM’S)just throw out words and phrases for about twenty minutes or so. It could be single words, phrases, concepts, questions, goals, targets, whatever comes to mind when think long term success of the family.
    2. “What is a family”? – FM’S define the family according to their understanding
    3. “What do strong families do?”
    4. “What happens to families that are not strong?”
    5. “What resources do we have to make our family strong?”
    6. “Where do we want our family to be in 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? 100 years?
    7. “How do we get there?”

There are so many more questions that should be asked as part of the probing strategy, but this is only a teaser for a guide to rebuilding families that my student group will be developing in the coming academic year. these seven items will take at least a day to discuss, and a strong facilitator is a must.

If you want action, encourage people to learn how to facilitate structured discussions. A flip chart easel and pad can be our most powerful weapon in intellectual warfare.

I say all this the grandson of one who was probably the last true ogimakaan of the entire Anishinabe nation. From his example I learned that Anishinabe leadership is not about power or privilege; it is all about the duty to ensure that every voice is heard and considered as the future is being charted. That’s what Her Majesty’s Indian Chiefs just don’t get.

Again, the guide to rebuilding families will come in the near future. Watch out for it. Our group is the University of Winnipeg Anishinabe Student Association; our motto is “Engage, Empower, Inspire.” The name might change to reflect the diversity of the group, but the motto will stay the same.
